Fur and luxury in New York

The Museum at the Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT) in New York is currently running an exhibition on luxury in fashion. The exhibition looks at the changing notions of luxury over the past 250 years and highlights how luxury in the 18th century circumvented the traditional intellectual bias to be seen more and more as a contribution to the wealth of nations and as a virtuous indulgence, which would benefit the greater public good by, among other things, providing work for numerous artisans.

The exhibition also sheds light on the democratisation of luxury with the marketing of ‘luxury to the masses’ starting from the 1950s. Evolving from a show off indulgence in the 1980s, luxury of the 1990s became more of a niche concept until today, when many observers believe that there exist two divergent ideas of luxury – old and new luxury. Old luxury is considered rooted in tradition and craftsmanship whereas new luxury is more style-driven and accessible.

As is befitting for an exhibition on luxury, the FIT Museum exhibition showcases two fur styles, one of them a fur-lined high-heeled shoe from Louis Vuitton, which has also been chosen to advertise the exhibition on websites and in catalogues and brochures.
